The engaged ED team at the 16-bed Yale New Haven Pequot Health Center rose to the challenge of reducing the patient door-to-room time by implementing a direct bedding process. Critical to providing efficient, timely care, the direct bedding process reduced patient the average door-to-room time by 11 minutes and length of stay by 19 minutes. With an average patient volume of 87 per day, this potentially totals 27 fewer hours of emergency department dwell time for patients and decreased staff workload. With the increased efficiency in the department, patients and the ED team have been pleased with the positive outcomes.
