The Journal of Emergency Nursing is ENA’s official peer-reviewed journal that features original research and updates from the emergency nursing field, while also covering practice and professional issues.

Warren Frankenberger, PhD, RN

Authors of the Year Award

Warren Frankenberger, PhD, RN, Joseph J. Zorc, MD, MSCE, Elizabeth D. Ten Have, BA, MLIS, Darcy Brodecki, BS, and Walter G. Faig, PhD for the research paper, “Triage Accuracy in Pediatrics Using the Emergency Severity Index”

Lead author Warren Frankenberger is a nurse scientist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and he serves on the ENA Emergency Nursing Research Advisory Council. He was awarded R03 from the NIH to evaluate triage from 17 pediatric emergency departments across the United States. He is currently working toward Implementation of Clinical Pathways in Pediatric Triage to improve accuracy and decrease variability in practice.

Nancy J. Denke, DNP, ACNP-BC, FNP-BC, FAEN, CEN, CCRN

Authors of the Year Award

Nancy J. Denke, DNP, ACNP-BC, FNP-BC, FAEN, CEN, CCRN, for the clinical paper, “Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxxicity (LAST): More Common Than You Think.”

Nancy J. Denke is recognized for her clinical paper, “Local Anesthetic Systemic Toxicity (LAST): More Common Than You Think.” She is a nurse practitioner with Toxicology Consultants of Arizona, Phoenix, and clinical faculty at Arizona State University-College of Health Innovation and Nursing. Denke, who received ENA’s Frank J Cole Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award in 2024, is a valued mentor to new DNP students as they hone their leadership skills, take on high-level responsibilities and become more involved with innovation within the health care system.
 
Denke began as a JEN reviewer in 2021, and two years later became Pharmacology/Toxicology section editor.
 
A fellow in the Academy of Emergency Nursing, she chaired its board from 2018-2019. She is a current member of the ENA Position Statement Committee and has held several volunteer roles, including on the ENPC Revision and Emergency Nursing Advanced Practice committees. She was part of the CEN review team and was a contributing author to the Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education program.
 
She has represented ENA in a collaborative work group with the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners and for the APRN Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses) Network committee.

Reviewer of the Year Award

Joseph S. Blansfield, MSN, COL (R) USAR

Joseph S. Blansfield, MSN, COL (R) USAR, a retired trauma educator and program consultant, chaired the TNCC, 8th Edition, Work Team and was part of the 7th Edition Work Team. He previously presented at the ENA Scientific Assembly, a precursor to ENA’s current annual education and networking conference and has had his own research published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Blansfield has been a TNCC Provider and Instructor since the course’s inception and was also part of the 7th Edition work teams. He is TNCC, 9th Edition, faculty while currently working on a memoir of his 50 years of clinical nursing practice.


Dan Mayer, MD, FACEP, FAEEM

Reviewer of the Year Award

Dan Mayer, MD, FACEP, FAEEM. In addition to providing valuable contributions as a reviewer for The Journal of Emergency Nursing, Mayer is a decision editor for Western Journal of Emergency Medicine and The Journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians. A retired, currently self-employed educational consultant and decision editor, he teaches evidence-based medicine to dental residents through the NYU Langone Dental School and continues to value his role reviewing papers and improving medical literature.


Significant Contributor of the Year Award

Annie W. Kelly

Annie W. Kelly has been the managing editor of the Journal of Emergency Nursing for more than 25 years. Behind the scenes, Kelly has been dedicated to the processes and systems needed to publish issues with consistent quality issues. She is responsible for guiding articles through the publishing system, copyediting, proofing, communicating with team members, as well as assisting authors, editors and reviewers. She is dedicated to helping nurse researchers navigate through the submission and publication process. She continues to work with the editor in chief to update various JEN materials. Kelly has attended every ENA annual conference to represent the Journal to the larger emergency nursing community.
