Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital includes a 28-bed children’s emergency department with ACS Level I Pediatric Trauma accreditation. The team launched several multidisciplinary initiatives to enhance patient and family-centered care. Examples include implementing a daily behavioral health huddle; formation of a compassionate care committee to support staff and
families; deployment of 24/7 milieu counselors; and creating individualized behavioral health plans. Through quality improvement projects, the department has seen a decrease in its left-without-being-seen rate and its use of restraints, while also improving patient throughput.
