University of Louisville Hospital Emergency Department
Louisville, Kentucky

The University of Louisville Hospital is a 404-bed academic teaching and research facility at the heart of the Louisville Metro in downtown Louisville. It is a Magnet-recognized, burn-certified, comprehensive stroke center, and the region’s only American College of Surgeons designated Adult Level 1 Trauma facility. UofL Hospital has been caring for patients for more than two centuries, since 1823. Over the years it has expanded into a system of UofL Health. Its mission is to transform the health of the communities it serves through compassionate, innovative, patient-centered care.
The emergency department is continuously working on initiatives to improve patient care and staff engagement.
One initiative the ED is most proud of is achieving pediatric readiness. A multi-disciplinary team worked together to ensure the ED had the resources, staff education and policies necessary to provide high-quality emergency care for its pediatric population. Furthermore, staff made great strides in improving workplace safety, sepsis bundle compliance, and staff satisfaction. The department continues to promote and encourage growth and development individually and as a unit.
This award exemplifies the dedication and compassionate care that the staff give daily. UofL Emergency Department is honored to have been selected for its first Lantern Award.
