University Hospital Adult Emergency Department – University Health

For more than 100 years, University Health has served the South Texas community by providing access to care and improving health through education and innovation.

The 45-bed adult emergency department cares for more than 117,000 patients annually. University Health’s accomplishments include being the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center for both adults and children, three-time Magnet designation, Comprehensive Stroke Center, 2024 U.S News & World Report High Performing in Maternity Care, and MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award.

The ED succeeded with initiatives that reduced blood culture contaminations and improved sepsis compliance. The team has also improved its response to patient and visitor violence, throughput of admissions, patient satisfaction, emergency management and preparedness, community collaborations and new graduate nurse onboarding. As the only publicly owned and operated health system in Bexar County, University Health is committed to serving the health needs of South Texas today and into the future. The ED staff takes pride in its work and is honored to be recognized by the Emergency Nurses Association.
