When The Mount Sinai Hospital – Saul Family Emergency Department underwent a comprehensive ED redesign and expansion, nursing leadership partnered closely with frontline staff and interdisciplinary teams to redesign patient flow processes, optimize triage and treatment pathways and implement innovative staffing and operational models to support a significantly larger footprint. The project increased capacity while maintaining a focus on quality, safety and patient-centered care. These efforts improved access to emergency care while preserving a strong culture of teamwork and nursing excellence during a period of transformational change to a 72-bed ED that saw more than 103,700 visits in 2025.
The ED team also initiated a nurse-led fall prevention program, “No Falls, Just V.I.B.E.S.” (Visualize Risk, Implement with Yellow, Bring it in Huddles, Empower the Team, Stop Falls). Developed by a multidisciplinary workgroup and driven by frontline staff, it combined evidence-based fall prevention strategies with standardized communication, purposeful rounding, visual safety cues and innovative fall-risk stretchers to improve patient safety in the ED. From April through November 2025, falls with injury decreased by 47 percent compared with the same period in the previous year. Compliance with fall-risk communication tools exceeded 90 percent A staff-led poster presentation was accepted at the Emergency Nursing 2026.
