The Sutter Roseville Medical Center emergency department team collaborated to improve pediatric emergency care and ensure early and safe transport to a higher level of care when necessary. This initiative involved the creation of a pediatric pre-alert process to improve preparation for critically ill or injured children arriving in the department, as well as early notification to the transfer center from Sutter Roseville, a 68-bed department that saw more than 119,000 patient visits in 2025. This process allows the interdisciplinary team to mobilize appropriate personnel, prepare pediatric-specific equipment and medications, clarify roles and anticipate the patient’s clinical needs before arrival. This coordinated approach supports faster interventions, improved communication and safer, more efficient, care during high-acuity pediatric emergencies.

A second initiative focused on removing financial barriers to professional growth and expanding access to hands-on clinical education. The department secured funding to support multiple nurses through certification-preparation courses and certification testing. Nurses are also encouraged to pursue advanced degrees through available tuition-reimbursement programs. Simulation is incorporated into annual skills days, and voluntary simulation labs are available to all interested nurses to provide additional opportunities to practice high-risk, low-frequency scenarios, strengthen teamwork and build clinical confidence. Together, these investments promote lifelong learning, specialty expertise and the continued development of emergency nursing leaders.
