South Shore University Emergency Department

Bay Shore, New York

South Shore University Hospital improved its door-to-doctor time for stroke patients and door-to-CAT scan time by providing education to the EMS community about pre-notification regarding stroke patients and education to the ED staff to call a code stroke when patients present with stroke-like symptoms. Additionally, designating an area to do EKGs when patients arrive with chest or abdominal complaints improved door-to-EKG times. Staff at the 90-bed ED that saw nearly 85,000 patients visits in 2023, are educated on presenting symptoms requiring an EKG within 10 minutes.
