Sharp Coronado Hospital Emergency Department
Recent initiatives in the 15-bed Sharp Coronado Hospital emergency department focused on two patient populations, high utilizers and victims of human trafficking.
The ED team recognized a rise in suspected trafficking cases. In response, the stretcherside nurses led the creation of a multidisciplinary training program in collaboration with a lived-experience survivor, social work and the Brown Simulation Center. Post-training, staff confidence in recognizing, responding and using the PEARR assessment tool increased significantly.
This project is now a model for system-wide implementation across Sharp HealthCare.
The team also worked to better serve its frequent ED users by launching real-time electronic health record alerts and individualized care plans, improving coordination and reducing unnecessary utilization. These efforts have enhanced outcomes and patient experience.
