The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center emergency department, which saw more than 89,000 patient visits in 2023, worked to transform the ED through several measures.

The team has improved throughput and patient satisfaction by including a physician in triage, reducing door-to-provider times and left without treatment, enhancing security measures, and adding a concierge dedicated to the ED.

The team also turned its attention to hiring and keeping its nurses. This focus on recruitment, retention and staffing has resulted in the elimination of travelers, reductions in turnover and use of premium pay, and new resources like a “Stress First Aid” therapist.
