Seattle Children’s Hospital Emergency Department

Without increasing the number of full-time equivalent staff, the staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital 44-bed emergency department re-envisioned its model of care. Working within its current space, the team implemented a provider in triage process, vertical care, as well as a “Supertrack,” and a “Results Wait Lobby.” The department worked in partnership with hospital leaders to establish a systemwide ED capacity alert triggered by National ED Overcrowding Scale scoring. Responses to alerts include rapid staff deployment; patient transport and movement by  inpatient staff; and flow MD huddles and admission order entry.
