Reston Hospital Center Emergency Department

In 2025–2026, the Reston Hospital Center Emergency Department prioritized optimization of the discharge patient pathway through a series of staff-led performance improvement initiatives. Enhancements in triage processes, direct-to-bed placement, reduced provider greet times and more efficient disposition and physical discharge workflows significantly improved patient throughput. As a result, length of stay for patients with an ESI Level 3 decreased from 178 minutes to 141 minutes. Low-acuity patient length of stay also improved, from 86 minutes to 67 minutes year over year. These sustained improvements in the 33-bed ED that saw nearly 39,000 patient visits in 2025 reflect the team’s commitment to operational excellence, patient-centered care and reducing delays throughout the emergency care continuum.
