Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange Emergency Care Center
Orange, California
Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange’s emergency care center is a vital 67-bed department, managing more than 96,000 visits annually and serving as a primary stroke center and cardiovascular receiving center.
The ECC is proud of its nurse-driven work focused on improving care for critical conditions including sepsis, stroke and STEMI. The department’s efforts included the introduction of a new staff role: a nurse specializing in the immediate management of sepsis, stroke and STEMI. This role ensures high-quality, timely care for patients, while acting as a resource for education and clinical inquiries and providing crucial support to bedside nurses.
The team also optimized antibiotic administration within an hour for hypertension and enhanced CMS SEP-1 bundle compliance. Through interprofessional and interdepartmental collaboration, door-to-PCI and door-to-needle times improved. A nurse-driven protocol for blood culture collection reduced contamination rates to under 2 percent. These achievements reinforce the dedication to quality care, patient safety and leadership in emergency services at this five-time ANCC Magnet with Distinction-designated facility.
