clinical expert nurses with specialized training in trauma and emergency care and the trauma process. Overall, the TNLs find that the most satisfying duty is the ability to provide mentorship to other team members and peers that helps mentees feel self- assured in their ability to provide superior care to all patients in the ED. The TNL program’s success is an example of how the department upholds its commitment to ensuring the highest quality of care to all trauma patients every day.

The ED also initiated the Trauma Grey protocol, which is activated by EMS personnel for patients presenting with external manifestation of blunt head trauma who are 65 years or older or of any age on systemic anticoagulation or antiplatelet agents. These patients are seen by an MD upon arrival at the ED and offloaded in CT to get immediate brain scans. Since implementation there has been a 9.4 percent decrease in mortality rate for this population.
