Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children Emergency Department
In December 2023, Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children’s emergency department introduced a provider in triage, or “team triage,” process. At the time, the ED’s left-without-treatment rate exceeded 4 percent. Through team triage, advanced practice providers conduct rapid assessments of patients upon their arrival at triage, particularly when all
beds in the department were occupied. In collaboration with nurses, paramedics and nursing assistants, these APPs were responsible for initiating care protocols, such as ordering imaging studies, performing lab tests and administering medications as needed. Following the implementation of these processes, the LWT rate dropped to below 1 percent.
Additionally, emergency nurses are part of a multi-disciplinary team that collaborates with other EDs in hospital organization, referral hospital EDs and EMS agencies. This team has successfully trained more than 3,500 nurses, physicians, EMS personnel and other health professionals from the region in pediatric emergency care. Its evaluation process assesses available
resources and provides constructive feedback. The team also offers education, simulations and essential tools to ensure the provision of swift, appropriate and quality care to the pediatric population.
