Norwalk Hospital Emergency Department

Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of Norwalk Hospital’s inpatient pediatric unit, the Norwalk Hospital Emergency Department led a strategic initiative to restore community confidence and bring pediatric patients back to the hospital. A dedicated pediatric emergency center was established, staffed by pediatric emergency doctors and child life specialists and designed to deliver efficient, family-centered care. This initiative streamlined patient flow, reduced overall emergency department length of stay and significantly improved access to timely care. As a result, the left without being seen rate decreased from 1.2 percent to 0.4 percent. Additionally, patient experience scores improved, reflecting greater satisfaction and trust among children and their families.

To strengthen workforce stability and ensure excellence in emergency nursing, the Norwalk Hospital Emergency Department implemented a PTAP-certified emergency department nurse residency program. The program provides a structured, evidence-based transition to practice through comprehensive education, simulation, clinical mentorship and ongoing professional support. This investment has enhanced recruitment while fostering a culture of learning, engagement and clinical excellence. Since implementation, the department has retained 80 percent of residency graduates. These graduates have developed into confident, highly competent emergency nurses who contribute to quality outcomes, patient safety and exceptional patient-centered care.
