Northeast Georgia Medical Center – Barrow Emergency Department

Winder, Georgia

Northeast Georgia Medical Center – Barrow has been improving the health of Barrow County for more than 65 years. This 56-bed hospital became a part of the Northeast Georgia Health System in 2017. This facility is a Primary Stroke Center and offers Emergency Services, Outpatient Services, and Inpatient Care with a six-bed Intermediate Care Unit in addition to the Medical–Surgical Beds. This system also provides the pre-hospital emergency services for Barrow County with six ambulances and one supervisor vehicle staffed 24/7. The nine-bed Emergency Department sees over 23,000 patients each year. This facility has worked diligently to improve stroke care in our community and has been able to achieve and maintain Primary Stroke Center status since 2020. One of the highlights for NGMC Barrow Emergency Department during our Lantern Award journey was to publicize the 70% baccalaureate-prepared nursing staff statistic, the over 50% advanced certification rate for these nurses and the positive impact these achievements have on quality and patient safety! These achievements exemplify the volume of support from the healthcare system, leaders and from peers in the department. The Lantern Award application has verified and displayed the knowledge that everyone in this department and system continues to focus on improving the health of our community in all that we do.
