Monmouth Medical Center Emergency Department, RWJBarnabas Health
The emergency department leadership at Monmouth Medical Center continually works to enhance patient care by improving throughput and reducing wait times. Although turnaround times were satisfactory, the department implemented a throughput nurse role to further optimize patient flow. This experienced, autonomous and proactive nurse focuses on expediting discharges, facilitating admissions to inpatient units and assisting triage during surges in ED volume. The role’s introduction led to measurable improvements, including reduced patient turnaround times, a decrease in the percentage of patients leaving without being seen and enhanced patient satisfaction scores, which reflect a commitment to continuous quality improvement in emergency care.
In addition, leadership is committed to fostering nurse well-being. Recognizing the impact of burnout in a dynamic ED environment, initiatives such as daily staff huddles promote team reflection, recognition and morale. Additional efforts include a self-scheduling system, enabling nurses to choose preferred shifts and maintain a work-life balance. These strategies have
resulted in a notable reduction in nurse turnover and increased staff satisfaction. By prioritizing staff wellness and engagement, MMC has cultivated a supportive work environment, making it both a preferred destination for patient care and a desirable workplace for nurses.
