MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center Emergency Department
The MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center emergency department staff created a nine-bed specialty care area within the ED to serve as a dedicated stroke response unit. The team created this comprehensive stroke center to provide rapid, specialized care for patients presenting with stroke symptoms. Strategically located next to imaging services and a state-of-the-art neurovascular suite, the unit enables immediate access to CT imaging and interventions such as mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusions.
The unit is staffed by ED clinicians and supported by a neurocritical care charge nurse, fostering a seamless multidisciplinary approach. This model streamlines transitions from triage to imaging, intervention and critical care—significantly reducing door-to-needle and door-to-reperfusion times. The 62-bed ED is part of a Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite hospital, and the new integration of emergency and neurology care in this dedicated space helps improve outcomes and patient experience.
