Jack D. Weiler Hospital Emergency Department, Montefiore Einstein
Montefiore Einstein’s Jack D. Weiler Emergency Department – a high-volume, 90-bed department – is committed to advancing patient safety through front-line-driven innovation and technology. Initiatives such as moving patients who could sit upright, rather than in beds and stretchers, ensure patients are cared for in ED areas designed for the level of care required. The vertical zone, specifically for lower-acuity, ambulatory patients, now accounts for more than 28 percent of monthly ED volume. Patients in this zone are navigated through care with staff, reducing reliance on stretchers and transport. This shift has led to more effective communication, expedited care and patient privacy.
Montefiore Einstein also leveraged technology, including a new electronic tracking board embedded in the electronic health record and mobile
medication scanning devices to aid accurate “real-time” medication dosing. The tracking board also enables nurses to advocate on behalf of patients more effectively by letting them monitor completion times for X-rays, CT scans or other tests. Mobile medication scanning devices supplied to all nurses and staff support during daily huddles, reinforce medication verification and education. These initiatives are continually fostering professional development and contribute to the high-quality care provided to every patient.
