Inova Fairfax Hospital Adult Emergency Department
Inova Fairfax Hospital Adult Emergency Department has reconfigured staff roles to better manage its high patient volume of more than 110,000 visits annually. The team implemented dedicated roles to optimize departmental throughput, including triage team leads, throughput coordinators and team leads positioned throughout the ED. As a result of these efforts, the department achieved fewer than 35,000 boarding hours annually, despite an average admission rate of 30 percent.
The team’s commitment to excellence extends to the development and support of staff. It utilizes the Tiered Skills Acquisition Model for orientation, providing new team members with a structured step-by-step learning experience which reduces the overwhelming nature associated with entering emergency nursing. Since implementing TSAM, new graduate retention increased 51 percent, and 135 new team members successfully onboarded in 2024.
