Gundersen Health System Emergency Services

La Crosse, Wisconsin

Gundersen Health System (GHS) is healthcare for neighbors, by neighbors. While we call La Crosse, Wisconsin home, our system has 7 hospitals and 65 clinics in neighboring communities. Inside our walls and our neighborhoods, we deliver world-class medical care combined with the right amount of love. We call it Love + Medicine, and it’s who we are.

Our La Crosse, Wisconsin hospital is a 335-bed facility located on the eastern banks of the upper Mississippi River. We are a Level II Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center, STEMI destination facility, and a Bariatric Center of Excellence. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has named GHS as a five-star place to receive care, the highest designation available. GHS was the first hospital in the country to produce more energy than it consumes, and we are repeatedly honored as one of America’s greenest hospitals.

Our 45-bed Emergency Services Department provides care to over 65,000 patients annually. Highlights of our ED include 90 percentile patient experience scores, left without being seen rates of less than 1%, a keen focus on department throughput with the addition of a provider in triage and a Flow Coordinator, a dedicated ED community health worker, and a Complex Care Committee for ED high utilizers which has noted over a $20,000 savings per month!

The dedication to excellence by the entire health care team is exemplified by achieving and sustaining these improvements despite facing unprecedented challenges brought on by the global pandemic.
