Grand Strand Medical Center Emergency Department

In 2023, Grand Strand Hospital Emergency Department launched a transformative care delivery model designed to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. This model prioritized direct bedding of incoming patients, cohort-based patient placement, a collaborative team triage approach, team nursing and private spaces for initial evaluations. The impact was immediate: improved arrival-to-bed times, reduced walkout rates, higher patient satisfaction and enhanced team communication. These changes led to faster completion of orders, procedures and imaging, ultimately reducing emergency department length of stay.

Front-line nursing staff, including the unit-based council, played a vital role in the
model’s development and success. From the beginning, nurses were empowered to lead change by driving innovation, shaping care delivery and improving departmental culture. Their autonomy and engagement were key to the model’s success and sustainability. Nurses embraced education, applied the model confidently and used their front-line insights to make real-time improvements. Their dedication continues to elevate patient care, staff engagement and nursing satisfaction in this 39-bed department.
