Froedtert West Bend Hospital Emergency Department
The Pediatric Readiness Committee at Froedtert West Bend Hospital’s emergency department exemplifies collaboration between physicians, nurses and other ED staff. From 2022 to 2023 the department’s National Pediatric Readiness Survey score improved by 48 percent. In 2024, the 24-bed department achieved an 84. This team’s work has made pediatric patient care a standard part of the department’s quality improvement and patient safety work.
It is well established that ED boarding contributes to ED overcrowding, which
negatively impacts both patient safety and patient outcomes. Through a collaboration between system leaders and ED leadership, new tactics were
implemented to reduce the time from decision to admit to the patient being physically in an inpatient bed. Prior to the change in approach, the six-month average for disposition to patient in bed was 128.8 minutes. After implementation, the six-month average for disposition to patient in bed decreased to 55.3 minutes.
