Using an electronic SBAR handoff tool, secure chat notifications and real-time visual tracking icons, the team streamlined communication and eliminated common barriers to timely transfers. Front-line ED and inpatient nurses collaborated to design a workflow that ensured consistent and complete information exchange and rapid identification of outstanding questions. As a result, ED-to-inpatient handoff attestation within 30 minutes improved from 29 percent to 50 percent, which illustrated strong collaboration, enhanced patient safety and improved overall emergency department throughput.
To help reduce stress and burnout in the 20-bed ED, a dedicated lunch relief nurse role was implemented to cover one patient assignment at a time. That allowed caregivers to take uninterrupted meal breaks with confidence that their patients were receiving safe, high-quality care. Stepping away from the fast-paced ED environment provides caregivers an opportunity to recharge and return refreshed, improving both well-being and patient care. By prioritizing caregiver resilience, the team can foster a healthier work environment while ensuring patients continue to receive the exceptional care they deserve.
