CHOC Children’s Hospital – Julia And George Argyros Emergency Department

Orange, California

The George and Julia Argyros Emergency Department at CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange, CA is a 35-bed pediatric emergency department and Level I ACS verified pediatric trauma center which boasts nearly a decade of excellence. Our ED team comprised of Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians, pediatric RNs, Emergency Medical Technicians, pediatric pharmacists, child life specialists, social workers, and mental health staff provided family-centered care to over 119,000 patients this year. Approximately 11% of patients treated in our ED require admission. At the center of the department is a pediatric base station where ED RNs with advanced training provide online medical control to paramedics transporting critically ill and injured children.

Daily huddles, briefs and debriefs help the team to maintain best practice and patient safety. As defenders of childhood, the CHOC ED team works collaboratively to achieve the following:

  • Maintain a blood contamination rate of less than 2%.
  • Obtain CT within 60 minutes of arrival for pediatric stroke patients.
  • Deliver medication safely with positive patient identification at 97% or higher.
  • Administer corticosteroids to asthmatic patients within 60 minutes of arrival.
Streamlined care that pivots on a dime is the hallmark of this dynamic three-time award winning department. The team thanks ENA for the opportunity to display their strength and receive such an honor.
