Children’s Nebraska Emergency Department

state’s first ACS Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. A multidisciplinary trauma education initiative provided hands-on microteaching, interdisciplinary skills training and evidence-based education on key pediatric trauma topics. Following the education initiative, 96 percent of participants agreed or strongly agreed that the education improved their knowledge and confidence. Beyond building clinical expertise, the initiative supported staff through organizational change. It reinforced a culture of respect, collaboration and continuous learning as well as enhanced the department’s ability to deliver timely, high-quality trauma care to injured children.

The 33-bed Children’s Nebraska ED also prioritized workplace safety by implementing a proactive, evidence-based approach to preventing and responding to patient and visitor violence. Recognizing that safety is essential to exceptional patient care, the department implemented a behavioral escalation response team to support staff in managing escalating behaviors. The initiative promoted interdisciplinary collaboration, de-escalation strategies and a culture of safety and respect for patients, families and team members. During the 28 days before implementation, the nurse injury rate was 1.01 per 1,000 ED visits. Following implementation, the department reported zero physical staff injuries at the time of its Lantern application.
