Atrium Health Navicent Peach Hospital Emergency Department
To enhance patient satisfaction, the Atrium Health Navicent Peach Hospital Emergency Department implemented the “Commit to Sit” initiative, which encourages providers and nurses to sit at the bedside during patient interactions. This approach fosters a more personal and attentive environment, as sitting conveys presence, attentiveness and empathy to significantly improve communication and build trust. These interactions are perceived as more meaningful, leading to increased satisfaction scores and stronger therapeutic relationships.
Concurrently, the ED team implemented processes to prevent patients leaving before treatment completion, including the “Provider in Triage” initiative. This strategy involves adding a mid-level provider in the triage area to perform a medical screening exam to ensure the patient is medically stable and begin the patient work up. Additionally, the staffing model was adjusted to add a nurse with the provider to complete any orders. The team improved its communication around waiting times and care progression, ensuring patients feel informed throughout their stay in the 14-bed department. This initiative optimizes patient flow by streamlining triage and promptly starting the necessary tests for the chief complaint.
