The 20-bed emergency department at Atrium Health Levine Children Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital experienced significant growth in patient volume, treating approximately 24,000 patients in 2024—more than doubling its volume since opening in 2019.
The ED team remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of the community while supporting staff and ensuring a safe, efficient care environment. Key safety initiatives include the installation of metal detectors, enhanced security presence, implementation of panic buttons, and the strategic reallocation of space within the department. Most recently, a dedicated fast-track unit was created to reduce delays and improve access to timely emergency care. In support of vulnerable pediatric populations, the Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital ED has partnered with the local child advocacy center to establish and sustain a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program, ensuring trained SANE nurses are available across all shifts to provide trauma-informed care to children in crisis.
