autism spectrum disorder. A multidisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, child life specialists and behavioral health experts implemented an Autism Friendly Questionnaire within the electronic health record, sensory support resources and staff education on autism-informed care. These interventions enable individualized care, reduce anxiety and sensory overload, improve communication, enhance safety and decrease the need for restraints. In December 2025, the 132-bed ED achieved Certified Autism Center designation, a sign of its commitment to inclusive, evidence-based care for children with ASD.

To address increasing ED boarding, a nurse navigator role was implemented to improve patient throughput, reduce length of stay and eliminate discharge barriers. By reviewing care plans and collaborating with inpatient teams, navigators identified and resolved delays related to consults, diagnostics and patient placement. Their work led to process improvements, hospital-wide flow initiatives, surge guidelines and expansion of capacity through discharge lounges and surge areas. As admissions increased by 10.5 percent in 2025, length of stay remained stable, admissions discharged directly from the ED increased, patient satisfaction improved significantly and staff reported enhanced communication and workflow efficiency.
