Atlantic Health CentraState Medical Center Emergency Department

Freehold, New Jersey

The Atlantic Health CentraState Medical Center Emergency Department recognized an opportunity to enhance pediatric emergency readiness. The team redesigned pediatric code carts, implemented Broselow Tape for rapid weight-based dosing, standardized airway equipment and expanded continuous CO2 monitoring in pediatric treatment areas. The team also strengthened staff education and competency around pediatric emergencies and respiratory care. These changes created a more consistent, organized and safer environment for pediatric patients and their families.

A second key initiative was implemented to improve patient experience and satisfaction scores. The team recognized a need to strengthen patient-centered care, communication and engagement throughout the patient’s ED visit. Through staff engagement, focused education, workflow improvements and ongoing monitoring of patient feedback, strategies to improve both the patient experience and overall quality of care succeeded. The “staff cared for you as a person” question on the Press Ganey increased from 45 percent to 84 percent, demonstrating a significant improvement in patient experience.
