Almoosa Specialist Hospital Emergency Department – Al Mubarraz

The first hospital in Saudi Arabia to earn an ENA Lantern Award, Almoosa
Specialist Hospital ED implemented two successful initiatives that reduced
extended patient stay hours and door-to-provider times.

Extended stays of more than three hours had contributed to overcrowding,
delays and patient dissatisfaction. In the first quarter of 2024, the rate
peaked at 3.2 percent. By implementing an override policy, optimizing the
ED whiteboard system, expanding bed capacity and other measures, that
rate declined to 2 percent by the end of the year. Simultaneously, door-to-
provider time dropped from 34 to 20 minutes in less than a year. This was achieved through the ESI triage system, 24/7 acute care clinics, physician
coverage adjustments, rapid assessment zone implementation and prioritizing elderly patients in triage.

Both initiatives, which exemplify the team’s focus on data-driven, patient-centered care, align with the goals of improving patient flow, enhancing satisfaction and reducing delays. While progress has been significant, efforts continue to overcome challenges such as overcrowding and limited observation beds.
