Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Emergency Department

A group of ED staff nurses realized there was a knowledge gap with newer staff
members hired into the emergency department at Akron Children’s Hospital
Mahoning Valley. They worked through the unit-based council, which then created a multidisciplinary team to focus on high-risk patient care situations and
strengthening the knowledge to care for that population. UBC took ownership of the idea and formed a subcommittee focused on education and simulation for the
treatment room. In collaboration with leadership, physicians and the unit educator, the UBC developed goals, guidelines and principles to provide patients with optimal care. By increasing training and education, along with implementation of behavioral health technicians within the 23-bed ED, the staff decreased violent restraint usage with the mental health population by 50 percent. The result is a safer environment prioritizing individual’s rights, safety and improving care quality.
