AHN Wexford Hospital Emergency Department

Wexford, Pennsylvania

The emergency department worked with the obstetrics and pediatrics departments to garner collaboration and engagement by using, Allegheny Health Network’s world-class education and simulation department, Star Center, to develop simulation training for the respective teams. Utilizing this high-fidelity training, staff participated in education on neonatal and pediatric resuscitation simulations as well as precipitous deliveries. While the obstetricians reviewed post-partum hemorrhage protocols, the neonatologist educated ED clinicians and nurses on how to care for a neonate after delivery. Live actors simulated challenging patient scenarios, which enhanced training for clinicians and nurses on how to best communicate with pediatric patients and their parents. As the emergency staff trained side by side with their obstetrics and pediatrics colleagues, those relationships were strengthened, and collaboration was improved.
