AdventHealth Zephyrhills Emergency Department
In the 26-bed AdventHealth Zephyrhills Emergency Department, two nurse- led initiatives led to improved patient care and operational efficiency. First, the implementation of an electronic SBAR reporting system transformed the handoff process to inpatient units. Spearheaded by ED nurses through shared governance, this initiative reduced the average time from bed assignment to ED departure from 95 minutes to just 42 minutes. The initiative not only improved throughput but also enhanced interdepartmental collaboration and nurse satisfaction. Second, the department addressed a high left-without-being-seen rate by reimagining the triage process. Shifting from a location-based to a process-driven model and deploying a team-based care approach, it saw a dramatic reduction in LWBS from 12.1% to less than 1%.
These initiatives reflect the power of front-line nursing leadership, data-driven decision-making and a commitment to continuous improvement.
