The AdventHealth Orlando emergency department has made significant improvements in decreasing the number of patients who left prior to being seen by an emergency provider, promoting prompt and safe care of all patients presenting to the ED. This was accomplished through frequent rounding, keeping patients informed, and creating a detailed plan for escalation once lobby waits reach 30 minutes.

Like many emergency departments, Advent Health Orlando’s 69-bed ED that sees approximately 95,100 patients per year experienced significant turnover and challenges in retaining experienced staff during and after the COVID pandemic. The team worked tirelessly to increase hiring efforts, new staff training and retention strategies in order to rebuild a strong workforce. Staff are supported through mentoring, continuous department education, tuition reimbursement, formal and informal recognition strategies and structured pathways for continued professional growth.
