Behind the Scenes Award

Raul Escamilla, AAS, EMT-Paramedic
Recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions behind the scenes to promote ENA’s mission of advancing excellence in emergency nursing; an ENA advocate who is often seen but not heard and donates countless hours to assist an ENA member or members in achieving local, state or national goals.
Raul Escamilla is a paramedic known among his emergency nursing colleagues for his commitment to building interprofessional collaboration. Recently, he, along with another paramedic and an emergency nurse, coauthored an abstract for the 2023 ANPD Aspire Conference to address the importance of interprofessional relationships.
A paramedic for 24 years, Escamilla quickly developed relationships with local EDs and the AHA training center when he joined a new EMS company in 2021. He has assisted two local hospitals with training for new graduate nurses, teaching ACLS, BLS and PALS. In the community, he provides Hands Only CPR and Stop the Bleed education, including offering the lessons in Spanish.
Escamilla recently supported the local ENA chapter’s three-day conference, working with his EMS company to provide a go bag and paramedics to staff the station alongside ENA members. He also jumped into action when a local hospital system received new equipment with little warning, and although the ED was familiar with the technology, they hadn’t used it. Escamilla arrived with his manikin and device to provide hands-on training.
He is commended for his quiet leadership style and passion for both direct and indirect patient care.
