Nursing Competency in Aging Award

Recognizes a nurse who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the care of the older adults in the emergency care setting and/or the older adults in a community program.

Jennifer has been a registered nurse for 31 years. She has worked in the emergency department since moving to Texas from the Philippines in 2003. She is passionate about her work as the staff development coordinator providing staff with valued knowledge and skills to deliver the best care to veterans. Her dedication to improving the care of older veterans in the ED led her to be the nurse champion in applying for the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation program. She provided leadership in developing, implementing and evaluating a standardized geriatric care initiative that fulfills the mission of the VA in the care of older veterans. She worked with multidisciplinary teams across the facility, ED leadership and the national VA geriatric ED core teams. In February 2022, the facility was awarded the Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation by the American College of Emergency Physicians.
