Recognizes a nurse who exemplifies outstanding nursing practice as demonstrated through clinical skills, care and compassion. This nurse is recognized by peers as an expert in emergency nursing and consistently exhibits traits associated with professional behavior and commitment to professional values. This individual may demonstrate outstanding commitment to a specialty population such as pediatrics or older adults within the specialty of emergency nursing.
Jana Petersen, an RN with Froedtert Hospital in Wisconsin, is known as a strong collaborator who readily shares research and information with her colleagues. A shift flow coordinator and preceptor, she is a mentor who communicates concisely and supportively to empower her peers.
Petersen is a unit champion for telemetry documentation, collaborating with system-level teams to decrease the potential for lost revenue. Her initiatives are now in practice at other system sites. She has been involved in numerous projects in her hospital, such as working to optimize the ED’s use of Rover, improving workflows that aided in the hospital’s chest pain accreditation, championing new equipment for the ED, and seeking additional training in placing intraosseous access to improve outcomes for patients.
She played an active role in organizing the post-pandemic return of the regional ENA conference, expanding participation to EMS professionals and ensuring the event ran smoothly.
When appropriate, she merges her paramedic licensure training with her holistic nursing approach and is complimented for being able assess and anticipate the many variables in treating complex patients. She has been recognized from within the hospital and by external organizations numerous times for her commitment to customer service.
