This award, named after one of ENA’s co-founders, honors an ENA member who has consistently demonstrated excellence in emergency nursing and has made significant contributions to the profession and to ENA. The award is presented at the Anita Dorr luncheon during ENA’s annual conference. Harriet Hawkins was among the first nurses to take the Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course, and she has been a longtime contributor to the course throughout its history. In the subsequent decades, she has taught ENPC around the world. In 1985, she helped start the critical care transport team at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where she is a resuscitation education nursing professional development specialist. In 2001, she created the hospital’s resuscitation program. Hawkins has a passion for humanitarian work, and, over the past 29 years, she has run a weekly medical clinic for the unhoused in her area. She has also participated in 28 international missions. Recognizing that many, including nurses, do not really know enough about the unhoused, she continues to help people understand the plight of unhoused individuals and how to help them. Hawkins was inducted into the Academy of Emergency Nursing in 2005 and currently serves as a board member for the Illinois ENA State Council, for which she chaired its pediatric committee for many years.
