The CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital is in the heart of downtown San Antonio. The hospital is committed to providing outstanding care focused on families. For more than 10 years, the CHRISTUS Children’s Emergency Department has provided hope and healing to the San Antonio Community as the first and only freestanding hospital dedicated solely to children and expectant women in the greater San Antonio area. The ministry was founded in 1869 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Their mission then, and our mission now, is to extend the healing hands of Jesus Christ and to ensure care for the most vulnerable populations in San Antonio and the surrounding communities.

Our dynamic emergency department consists of a highly collaborative team of Registered Nurses, Emergency Department Technicians, Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, Pharmacists, Social Workers, and Child Life Specialists. The emergency department has the only pediatric forensic team in San Antonio and the surrounding 37 counties. Among the many accomplishments of the team are the neutropenia protocol, sepsis response, bar scanning compliance, and blood culture contamination rates. CHRISTUS Children’s also participates in research that not only benefits our patients but provides the foundation for others to improve care to their own pediatric populations. The department embraces and participates in a shared governance model, where collaboration with associates and leaders enables change and outcomes that benefit our patients.
