Children’s Mercy Adele Hall Team – Kansas City, Missouri

Crisis Response Team Award

Children’s Mercy Adele Hall Team

When the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory rally in 2024 turned into a shooting-related mass casualty event, the Adele Hall Emergency Department was prepared to treat patients and tend to families amid a terrifying and chaotic scene.

Thanks to strong collaboration and communication between the ED team, emergency management and patient progression hub, and hospital employees who were staffing the event’s on-site medical tent, the department was prepared, and patient care was expedited for the victims who were rushed to the facility.

In addition to medical care, the staff from the 39-bed department made sure all patients and their families were offered emotional support from the social workers and chaplains during the initial response and afterward.

The multidisciplinary collaboration among the departments provided exemplary care to the patients and their families. Staff were well prepared and trained prior to events unfolding thanks to previous educational tabletop exercises organized in collaboration with emergency management.
