Overlook Medical Center Emergency Services, Union Campus, Atlantic Health System

Union, New Jersey

Overlook Medical Center’s Union Campus is a satellite emergency department, located 12 miles from the main hospital acute care facility, providing care to over 38,000 patients annually. The 20-bed full-service ED, provides 24/7, nationally-recognized care, including emergency and advanced cardiovascular care, with the administration of thrombolytic options, as well as comprehensive stroke care, using telemedicine and robotic services. Additionally, our neuroscience program was the first in the nation to deploy and use portable telestroke technology in ambulances for routine pre-hospital assessment of stroke patients.

Overlook Medical Center received the Healthgrades 2020 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™, a distinction placing the hospital in the top 1 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance. Union Campus ED has the distinguished honor of being one of only two EDs nationwide to receive ENA’s Lantern Award for four consecutive cycles since its inception in 2011 for excellence in practice and performance.

Sustaining and maintaining key quality metrics and showing improvements based on evidence- based practices with ED initiatives is key to the Union ED achieving Lantern Award status. Key exemplars included shared governance unit-based initiatives with bedside shift report and AIDET, team member autonomy with scheduling, mock active shooter drills with code lockdown training, daily safety huddles, implementation of an OB Hemorrhage Tackle Box, development of multidisciplinary protocols to decrease Foley usage and offering professional development opportunities.
