Lead author Stephanie O. Ibemere, of Texas, is an assistant professor at Duke University School of Nursing, which recognized her in 2024 with the Early Career Scientist Award. In 2025, her work in sickle cell disease research also earned her the Best Global Health Abstract at the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Convention and the Pat Corley RN Sickle Cell Ambassador Award from the Cayenne Wellness Center and Children’s Foundation.

As a direct result of this study, Needleman – the lead author and medical director of the Cook County Health Emergency Department in Chicago – and coauthors have reported continued improvement in pain management in intubated emergency department patients.
