The Torrance Memorial Medical Center emergency department implemented several key initiatives to enhance patient throughput and reduce falls, ensuring better patient outcomes and safety. To improve patient throughput, the hospital expanded the ED’s capacity by opening multiple areas within the facility. This strategic move accommodates boarders and manages the increased ED census more efficiently. By utilizing the additional spaces, Torrance Memorial reduced overcrowding and minimized wait times, allowing for quicker assessment and treatment of patients. This initiative ensures patients receive timely and effective care, even during peak times.

For fall reduction, the ED adopted a comprehensive approach to safeguard patients. Patients identified as a fall risk are provided nonslip socks. Bed alarms are installed to alert staff when a patient attempts to leave the bed without assistance. Moreover, staff emphasize patient education, informing patients of the importance of using the call light to request help when getting out of bed. To further support this initiative, the ED invested in equipment such as the Sera Steady and additional wheelchairs. These tools aid in safely transferring patients from the bed to the restroom, reducing the likelihood of falls. Through these targeted measures, the 32-bed ED is committed to ensuring patient safety and well-being.
