Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) is a a 700-bed tertiary health facility located within the Metro South Health region in Brisbane, South East Queensland, Australia. Metro South Health serves an estimated population of 1.2 million people, 23 percent of Queensland’s population. The Princess Alexandra Hospital is renowned for its work in trauma management, liver transplantation, renal transplantation, spinal injury management, brain injury rehabilitation and skull base surgery.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital Emergency Department is one of the largest adult teaching hospital EDs in Australia, providing care to more than 65,000 patients annually. The Princess Alexandra Hospital Emergency Department is honored to have been selected as one of the first International Lantern Award recipients.

Initiatives that contributed to the Lantern Award submission include the following:

• Response to Occupational Violence Emergencies (ROVE): a senior nursing clinician who responds to occupational violence emergencies which led to a 50-percent reduction in patient restraints and a 300-percent reduction in workdays lost due to occupational violence
• The development of the Complex Users of ED (CUED) model of care, which resulted in a decrease in frequent presenters to ED
• Development of an ED leadership capability framework for nurses, aligned with a formal mentoring program and development pathways
