Pennsylvania Hospital, a 467-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Health System, was established as the earliest public hospital in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond. Pennsylvania Hospital has been a leader in patient care, treatment techniques and medical research for more than 260 years.

Its 32-bed emergency department provides care to more than 50,000 patients annually and is in a position to vastly impact the surrounding Philadelphia population. It is the first ED in the University of Pennsylvania Health System to receive the Lantern Award and the first to be a four-time recipient. The emergency department staff strives for excellence in all that it does as an ED and hospital and takes pride in collaborative interdisciplinary relationships that have led to continued excellence in the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Pennsylvania Hospital’s accomplishments include Magnet designation, Beacon Awards, Baby-Friendly designation, and Joint Commission Perinatal Care Certification.
