Mount Sinai South Nassau Emergency Department

Oceanside, New York

The emergency department at Mount Sinai South Nassau implemented six key objectives that led to a significant reduction in the left without being seen rate. Even with a substantial increase in patient volume, the department has maintained a LWBS rate around 2 percent, dropping from an average of 6.99 percent in 2022 to 2.2 percent in 2023. Key measures include the introduction of an ED RN as the first point of contact, paramedic integration, provider presence in triage, a dedicated 24/7 Fast Track area, a “pull until full” approach, and enhanced staffing across all disciplines. These strategies have collectively improved patient flow and satisfaction, showcasing a commitment to exceptional patient care.

The staff also focused on nurse recruitment and retention. Their efforts generated more than 40 independent RNs who graduated from an intensive nurse residency program. The staffing enhancements have resulted in zero nursing vacancies and a 1 percent turnover rate, ensuring that the patients receive the best care from a dedicated and fully staffed team.
