Jefferson Bucks Emergency Department
Langhorne, Pennsylvania
Jefferson Bucks ED Lantern Award highlights the departments a successful shared governance initiative aimed at reducing blood culture contamination rates. Led by the nursing staff and supported by a multidisciplinary team, its approach is firmly grounded in evidence-based practices. The department achieved a significant and sustained reduction in blood culture contamination rates.
In addition to achievements in infection control, the staff made substantial strides in improving patient throughput and satisfaction. Recognizing the challenges posed by prolonged wait times and overcrowded waiting rooms, particularly during peak hours from 11am to 11pm, targeted staffing solutions were implemented. The measures included deployment of an advanced practice practitioner and dedicated nursing personnel to conduct timely medical screening examinations and initiate treatment protocols immediately following triage. This proactive approach has effectively reduced the number of patients leaving the ED without being seen by a physician or advanced practitioner.
These strategic initiatives have not only enhanced operational efficiency but also contributed to a measurable improvement in patient satisfaction scores. By prioritizing patient care and implementing evidence-based practices, the staff continues to uphold its commitment to excellence in emergency medical services.
