Baptist Health South Miami Hospital Emergency Department

South Miami Hospital Emergency Department is committed to delivering safe, high- quality care for patients and staff. In response to rising workplace violence, a dedicated Workplace Violence Council was established to maintain a secure
environment. The council enforces a zero-tolerance policy against physical violence, threats and intimidation to promote a harm-free workplace. To further enhance safety, the 39-bed ED implemented an AI-driven sound detection system that identifies early signs of aggression in patients, visitors or staff. Upon detection, real-time alerts are sent to security, who promptly respond to evaluate and de-escalate the situation.

Patients who leave without being seen may have serious medical conditions that go undiagnosed, posing significant health risks. High LWBS rates also negatively affect hospital reputation, revenue and staff morale. To address this, a Fast Track process
was introduced, creating a dedicated area for lower-acuity patients with minor complaints. Fast Track enables timely evaluation and treatment by nursing and medical staff. Prior to 2022, the LWBS rate was 3.5 percent, exceeding the national benchmark of 2 percent. Since implementing Fast Track, LWBS rates have consistently remained below 2 percent, improving patient flow and satisfaction.
